The Hunter

The Hunter

He hates to get up for work
And daily has to rush out the door,
Dreams about the day
When he does that no more.

Sometime complains of energy's lack
Falling arches or painful back.
Can't seem to remember important dates
But for special seasons, he waits and waits...

He's up bright and early or
In the middle of the night
Dresses by the stars
Or the dimmest of lights.

Cold doesn't matter
And distance doesn't count at all
This is the hunter
Answering the call!

He sits in silence
And waits for his prey
Once in his sight
It doesn't get away.

Once the hunter's instinct was so important
To feed and clothe us all
Nature has instilled this genetic trait in hunting men
And they must answer its call!
Thena Smith

Daddy Went A-hunting

Daddy went a-hunting
A hunting he did go
Daddy came home again
Without a deer you know!

Dad went a- fishing
To catch for us our dinner
If we ate what daddy caught
We all would be much thinner!

Daddy went a- hunting
This time it was for quail
But everytime he tried to shoot
His gun did seem to fail!

Daddy is a true sportsman
He loves to hunt and fish
And that someday he will come home with game
Is Daddy's fondest wish!
Thena Smith

Hubby shot a turkey
And brought it home to eat
It really was delicious
A really tasty treat!
I am so very proud of you, I said
And though it wasn't very clear
I know I heard him say
"I was shooting at a deer..."

Telling Our Story

Telling Our Story

We have a story that is unique
It is told in our eyes
And our voices when we speak.
It is written in our hearts
And flows out in gentle ways
When we are with those special ones
Who bring joy to our days.
We must not be afraid to tell it;
It is too special not to share.
And if we aren't the ones to do it
Our story won't be there
To inspire and encourage
Or to bring laughter to a face;
It won't be there to encircle loved ones
Like a gentle fond embrace.
Not every day was perfect,
Nor was every moment sublime,
But it is a wonderful story
And it is yours and mine.

You Are My Hero

Everyone needs a hero
To look up to each day
A person who is there for them
In their own special way.

Some people are national heroes
Seen on the television screen,
While others quietly live for others
As a wonderful, loving human being.

You may not have won blue ribbons
And wear no medals on your chest
But you will always be my hero,
And because I know you, I am blessed!

In Honor of Virgina Tech

We will recover
But we will not be the same.
We will grow stronger,
But we will never forget
each missing name.
We will carry on;
we will prevail.
We will fight
for the good and true.
But we will not forget;
we will never forget
The tragedy we’ve been through.
It is in our hearts and minds;
it is with us every day.
It will get better with time
but the memory
will not fade away.
We must go forward
in our daily quest,
For those we’ve lost
and honor in our memories
Would want for us nothing less.

What I Want to Be

We plan when we are children
And dream of what we want to be
It begins almost as soon
As we leave our mothers' knees.
But when we get older
Our prayer becomes a plea
That we would become
What God wants us to be.

Good Morning!

When I awake each morning
This prayer of thanks I say
Thank you, Dear Father
For giving me another day.
Bless all of those I love
And those whom I don't know
Help me to use all that you've given me
That I might continue to grow.
Help me to develop daily
Any gifts you've given
To prepare me to deal with earth
And fit me, Lord, for Heaven.

Amen

Misunderstood

Today I was misunderstood
Oh, how I hurt inside
Now I understand, Dear Lord
How much of me is pride!

Wedding Day without Mom

This was the day I wanted to share with you-
The day I had dreamed of for my entire life
This was the day I would happily become a wife.-
The day I dreamed of as a little girl
This was the day that would be a milestone in my world.
But this was the day that I never imagined would be
Without the mother who meant the world to me.
But surely in God’s plan for us
In Heavenly portals up above us
We can be glimpsed by those gone ahead
Who so dearly love us.
Thena

Without You Daddy

I walked down the aisle today
Thanking God that you had been in my life
Even though you were not here
To bless me with your love
As I became a wife.
Even though I could not see you
Your influence was everywhere
As I wrote the vows I would say
To choosing the gown I would wear.
Thank you Daddy for being you
And thank God for the dad He gave to me
Who taught me to live not only for the now
But for eternity.

Brother Grad short verses

Short Brother Ditties

I didn't tell on you
When you broke the lamp
And we blamed it on the dog
I turned away on the day
When you turned loose your frog.
I smiled when you said I was silly
And I laughed at your jokes each day
And now that you are graduating
I feel I must have my say!
I don't think you are smart
I don't that it at all
I think that you are creative
And a genius overall!
I will miss our silly arguments
And being together every day
And treasured memories will become
The games we used to play!
Thena

Dear Brother,
You always thought
Mom loved you best
And held that over me
Said she whispered that in your ear
But she did the same to me!
Thena

Dear Brother
I just saw your graduation announcement
Laying on your dresser
And I can only conclude
That you are a really good guesser!
Congratulations anyway,
Your sis

Happy 50th Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary!

When you open up this little book
Read carefully each part
For the words I've written here
I first wrote in my heart.
For fifty years you've shared
All the things that life had in store
And my fervent prayer to God above
Is that you would have at least 50 more.
The times you've shared are so special
And your favorite place is "together"
Where you can whisper in your spouse's ear
I will love you forever and ever.
Happy Anniversary!

About Grandparents

You Bring Us Joy

This book is a simple gift
To share our love with you
And thank you for your love
And all of the wonderful things you do.
For years you cared for us
And nurtured our family
Being the strong and supporting branch
On our family tree.
You took us out together
For luches and for trips
You took us to the ocean
So we could take summer dips.
And now the grandkids adore you
And your tenderness with each one
Is such a blessing to witness
As you encourage their creativity and fun.
You loved our mother and cherished her
And have showered us with love
Our whole lives through
And we have created just a token to show
Our Love For You!

Thena Smith

To the Best Granddad

When grandchildren arrive
We always think what fun
Life with them will be-
What fun to share with them
Ant every opportunity.
But modern life has folks traveling
And grandkids are scattered
Far and wide across the land
As parents meet military or professional demand.
Grandparents watch as they see the kids move
So very far away but yet cling to the hope
Deep in their hearts
That they will be closer to them someday.
But neither time nor distance
Can diminish the dedication and love
That a grandparent has for each
For even though the hand can't touch--
The heart can reach!

Thena Smith

Dear Dad,

I created this album especially for you
It's full of love from your grandkids
Page after page the whole book through!
It has photos of them as each one sends
Happiness, hugs and giggles and grins!
It is our hope and our prayer
That in your healing we can share
By showing you how much we adore you,
Surrounding you with love that we have for you,
And By lifting you up to Heaven each day
With each special prayer we pray.
Let this little book show you the heart
Of those special little grandkids
In whose creation you had a part.
For you are my dad and they inherited too
Wonderful traits that came from you!

Big Sister verses

Big Sister

I’m a big sister
And I’m sure you will agree
That an awesome responsibility
Will belong to me.

Awesome is a word I heard
That means it’s an awful lot
And when it comes to this new task
Awesome is what I’ve got!

Thena

Look at Me, I’m a big Sister

Look at me
Am I different now
Today I’m a big sister
Yesterday I didn’t know how!

I didn’t know how to be
The sister to a baby brother
But today I think I do the job
Better than any other!

Thena

Being a Big Sister

Being a big sister
Seemed to be a scary thing to ask
Of some one who is only 3
But that is what is expected
And I guess that I will be!
I’m happy and excited to say
That a baby brother I will have
Although I don’t know the day!
Mommy says that I will be a good one
And not to worry or fret
For when it comes to “sistering”
I’ll be the best one yet!
Thena

A Little Brother

A little brother came to our house
My mommy brought him home
She says that he will stay with us
And be our very own.

She says that makes me a sister
A big sister to this little baby boy
And the way she described it
I think it is something I will enjoy.

I have learned so many things
Now that I am over three
And for all the stuff he will need to know
Little brother can depend on me!

We Love Our Librarian!

We Love Our Librarian!

Our library is a special place
Where we love to go
It has things to entertain us
And teach us as we grow.
With a wealth of information
And a librarian who is so kind
We enjoy being in the library
As we improve our minds.
Thena

The Library

Ships and castles and monsters
Bugs and bikes and cars
Horses and cats and dogs
Rockets to take me to Mars.
All kinds of things await me
And I can try them without a care
It's all as safe as it can be
For my library holds them there!

Thena

Here's a hug to the librarian
Who watches over our books each day
The one who lets us take them home
Making sure no books go astray!

Here's kudos the the librarian
Who protects each cover and spine
Making sure that when they are returned
They each one look just fine!

Here's a smile to the librarian
Who keeps us up to date
On knowing the newest things to read
And that we don't return them late!

Thena

I love the library
I love to browse through it
Taking an aisle at a time
Spending an afternoon
With a wonderful book
Is a lovely way to spend my time.

I love the librarians
Who help me to find what I need
They are there when I'm searching
For just the right book
And make sure that I succeed!

Poems for Baby Banks

Baby Bank

Teach Me
Teach me about the value
Of saving a coin each day
When I find it in the yard
While I am out at play.
Show me how to save my findings
As I travel the floor by knee
Picking up the coins on the rug
That my baby eyes can see.
Watch me as I find coins in the grass
That folks drop as they walk each day
And what fun to watch my collection grow
With homeless coins that come my way.
Thena
My Bank
Pennies, nickels and dimes
If I put them in this bank-they're mine.
If I find a penny on the floor
It isn't homeless any more
I put it in this little pig
And soon the amount may get so big!
THena

If I find a penny
I will not toss it away
But will put it in this little bank
To save for a rainy day.
Found money on the sidewalk
Or even in the yard-
I will save it when I find it
For to spot it isn't very hard.
Thena
If you find a penny
Put it in this little bank
As you go back to play
For soon the pennies will add up
And be there for a rainy day.
If you find a nickel,
I hope it gives you a smile
For nickels become dollars
In just a little while.
I hope this brings you fun
As you watch your fortune add up each day
And may angels sprinkle pennies on the sidewalk
As you go about your way.
Thena
Fortune Found
For pennies found upon the ground
When going for a walk each day
For dimes and nickels that appear
When you are out at play.
For quarters under cushions
Whose sparkle catches your eye
And end up in this little bank
They will add up by and by.
Put them in this little bank
And leave it on a shelf
For soon its value will mount up so much
That you will surprise yourself!
Thena

Poems for today

I will try to send your way
A little poem for today
To give you a little gift
Something to give your heart a lift.

Someone Cares
Someone out there is hurting
And they need a loving touch
They need to know that someone cares
And loves them very much.

Someone out there feels all alone
Not just a bit sad and blue
But someone feels so very depressed
That they don't know what to do.

Someone out there needs a kind word
Or a loving touch upon their brow
And many of us would love to help
But we feel we don't know how.

Someone out there is praying
For a word from God above
That will confirm that He is real
And assure them of His love.

Someone out there needs a friend
And needs a bit of sweet relief
From all the trials they're going through
And needs the comfort of belief.

Someone could be the hand God uses
Or the human that He will send
To help heal the hurting, aching heart
And be the Heaven chosen friend.

Don't say "I'm just one person
There's nothing I can do."
But be a willing vessel
If God chooses to send you.

There's Something About a Boy and His Dog

There's just something about a boy and his dog
That brings my heart pure joy
A dog is a beautiful sight in its own right
But even more wonderful with a boy!

A boy will let a dog lick his face
And share his ice cream or cake
Will let him sit beside him on a rock
And jump with him into the lake.

A boy will roll around in the grass
And not worry if a pup has fleas
Won't mind getting a bit dirty
Or complain about the scratchiness of leaves.

A boy needs a dog that loves to run
A dog that will chase balls and sticks
And you can see the love in a boy's heart
Reflected back in the dog that he picks!

It's Good to be Busy!

It is better to be busy
And have a lot to do
That to have your hands be idle
The whole day through!

It is better to wonder
How you will get things done
Than to sit and worry
About how to have some fun.

It is better to be busy
Even though it can cause a strain
But it keeps you feeling useful
And exercises your brain!
